My photo tour group and I had a wonderful photo session with Kazakh people in a traditional yurt today. The models were dressed ethnic clothing, and even though the interior of the yurt was quite dark I simply raised the ISO so my shutter speed was fast enough for sharp pictures. The only illumination came from the doorway. The rugs and wall hangings that covered almost the entire interior had a lot of red in them, and that made the skin tones of the mother and daughter too reddish. Therefore, I selected the faces with the quick selection tool in Photoshop and used Image > adjustments > hue/saturation to reduce just the red color. In the submenu within the dialog box, I pulled down the submenu and chose 'red'. Then I moved the saturation slider to the left. The camera settings for this shot were 1/160, f/4.5, 3200 ISO, and I used a Canon 16-35mm III for the portrait. The background is very busy in terms of color and pattern, but that doesn't bother me in this case because this is, in a sense, an environmental portrait. I had a piece of black velvet with me, but I decided I liked the Kazakh design on the wall because it is authentic and it gives a sense of what the interior of the yurt looks like.
