Austria is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Stunning mountain landscapes, picture-postcard villages, awe-inspiring medieval architecture, and dramatic waterfalls make Austria a particularly exciting photographic destination. The diversity of subject matter means all your photographic skills will be called upon to create great images, from long shutter speeds when shooting raging waterfalls to taking vertical panoramas in spectacular cathedrals, and from shooting HDR in the blue hour to focus stacking with a telephoto lens. Join Jim for this special tour in which you'll capture some of the best pictures of your life.

Itinerary:
Day 1, Sept. 11, Thursday
Arrive this day in Salzburg international airport and take a taxi to the hotel. We meet in the lobby of the hotel at 5pm for an orientation to the tour and Jim will answer any questions about photography to prepare you for the upcoming opportunities. This will be followed by a welcome dinner in one of the local traditional restaurants. If you are not too tired, we can do twilight photography in this beautiful city. Overnight Salzburg.
Day 2, Sept. 12, Friday
We have a day to explore medieval Salzburg, the most beautiful historical city of Austria. We will photograph the old town with the 17th century Baroque cathedral, the old cemetery, the incredible Collegiate Church, and more. There will be some
free time to visit the the 11th century fortress above the city with its commanding view of the town. Just outside the city is the 16th century Anif Palace reflecting beautifully in a mirror lake. Our sunset and blue hour shoot will be at an elevated terrace with a stunning view of the city where we can capture Salzburg’s numerous bell towers and the illuminated fortress. Overnight Salzburg.
Day 3, Sept. 13, Saturday
After breakfast, we depart from Salzburg and take a stunning route through the Austrian Alps to a village near Krimml. The towering mountains make a stunning backdrop to some of the most dynamic scenes you'll ever see. We make a stop to photograph a mountain lake, a scenic church and a narrow river gorge along the way. Arrival at our hotel and overnight in Krimml Waterfalls.
Day 4, Sept. 14, Sunday
Krimml Waterfalls is a dramatic tiered falls that begins at the top of the Krimmler Ache valley and plunges downward in three stages. There is a serpentine trail that gives access to the entire scene so we can take amazing pictures at many vantage points. This is one of the most beautiful nature areas in a country known for its natural beauty. You'll want to experiment with slow shutter speeds, but you'll also want a fast speed to freeze the remarkable pattern of water drops. There is a cable car nearby that goes to a mountain ski resort, offering panorama views of the highest peaks in the area. Overnight Krimml Waterfalls.
Day 5, Sept. 15, Monday
Today we drive deep into the Austrian Alps. We'll stop the fairytale village of Heiligenblut with its iconic church against a backdrop of 12,461 foot Grossglockner. The high alpine road we take is a spectacular drive with endless landscape opportunities that take your breath away. If we're lucky, we'll see ibex, marmots, and a number of alpine birds like the Griffon vulture, sparrow hawk, and the Eurasian kestrel. If the sky is clear at night, we'll have a great view of the Milky Way and Jim will show you how to take a panorama image of it. Overnight in Edelweissspitze at 8000 feet.
Day 6, Sept. 16, Tuesday
After sunrise photography of our commanding view of the mountains, we drive to the eastern part of the Austrian Alps. We will be based for 3 nights near Hallstatt, considered to be the most picturesque
village in Austria. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997, and it is incredibly photogenic from every angle. Its 16th century houses and iconic church reflect beautifully in Lake Hallstatt's western shore. A gondola will takes us to an elevated viewpoint over the town and the lake, and it can only be described as spectacular. Overnight Hallstatt.
Days 7 - 8, Sept. 17 - 18, Wednesday & Thursday
The area of Hallstatt and nearby Gosau offers many beautiful landscape opportunities. We will photograph pristine mountain lakes, such as Gosausee, and we'll take a gondola to the top of a mountain with unbelievable views of rugged snow-capped peaks. There are also some dramatic river canyons we'll explore, and a highlight of a day of
highlights is Golling waterfall which is framed by rugged geology and a verdant forest. Overnight Hallstatt.
Day 9, September 19, Friday
After a morning photo shoot around Gosau, our journey continues to Vienna, a truly stunning city filled with historic architectural wonders. Our route is beautifully scenic and we'll stop a few times, and we arrive in the city in the late afternoon. Twilight photography in Vienna is amazing because the classic medieval architecture is illuminated so artfully. Overnight Vienna.
Day 10, Sept. 20, Saturday
We have a full day to explore and photograph the architectural masterpieces of Vienna. We start with the gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral that opened in 1578, then we walk through the old town shooting churches, palaces, the city hall, and the striking opera house. You'll have leisure time in the afternoon to further photograph or do some last minute shopping, and then we have another blue hour photo session followed by our farewell dinner. Overnight Vienna.
Day 11, Sept. 21, Sunday
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for our return flight home, knowing we've taken beautiful pictures of one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
Tour cost: $6950. Includes 10 nights lodging based on double occupancy, all meals, all ground transportation, services of an English speaking local guide, all entrance fees, photo instruction, and critiques on demand.
