This is the Church of St. George in Lalibela, Ethiopia. It dates from the late 12th century, and what is particularly unique about it is that it was carved out of solid rock from volcanic tufa. This church was not built in pieces, as almost every other structure is. Instead, rock was taken away from this site and the church is what's left. It is truly brilliant from an engineering perspective as well as conceptually. I took this picture from ground level looking down at the church with a 14mm wide angle, and my settings were 1/500, f/11, 2000 ISO. Note that the foreground is sharp and so is the background. This shows you the incredible depth of field of a 14mm lens.

Jim - Thank you, Rosemary. Yes, it was right near the edge. I'm very uncomfortable near edges like this, but I have to get the picture...
