A trip to Newfoundland would not be complete without a picture of a Newfoundland dog. Newfies and great Pyrenees, which is what I have, are similar except their color. Pyrenees are white and Newfies are black, plus Newfies weight about 20 pounds more. One of the ladies in my photo tour group met someone who knew someone who had a Newfie, and with a phone call we'd arranged a short photo session. We photographed the 5-year old Newfie, named Jazz, in the owner's backyard, and the background wasn't very good. So, I replaced it with an iceberg in fog that we had just seen on a boat trip in St. Anthony's. Separating the dog from the background with all that hair was a daunting task, but I think this came out reasonably well. Notice that the grass became out of focus behind Jazz, and therefore I had to make the iceberg picture out of focus to make this optically believable. To do that, I used Filter > blur gallery > field blur. Most people use Gaussian blur, but this doesn't simulate well the kind of shallow depth of field you get from a lens.
