It's hard to believe looking at these 'cute' hippos with their big, almost comical ears that more people in Africa are killed by these seemingly gentle giants than any other animal. Villages go to the river to bathe and wash their clothes, unaware that a hippo might be totally submerged just a few feet away. Usually I like to shoot wildlife from a low perspective, but this elevated bank of the river gave me a unique angle. To fill the frame with nothing but the five heads, I used a 500mm telephoto, and my settings were 1/1000, f/4.5, and 200 ISO. The fairly low angle of the sun provided perfect side light which emphasized and dramatized the texture of the hippos' skin.
