One of the most amazing things in the world to experience and photograph is the Snow and Ice Festival in Harbin, China. 10,000 workers start cutting blocks of ice from the river that goes through the city as soon as it gets cold enough, and they construct an ice city. Buildings, stairways, archways, ice slides -- it's simply outrageous. And the workers drill holes in the ice into which they place colored florescent lights that are connected to a music system. Wow! It's very, very cold at night -- obviously -- like minus 35 degrees Fahrenheit. But it's worth braving this kind of cold to see this. To get this picture, I climbed three flights of ice steps holding onto an ice railing to the third floor of an ice building. The steps had indoor/outdoor carpeting so people didn't kill themselves. I've decided to led another tour here at the end of December next year. My settings for this shot, taken from a tripod, were 1/2 second, f/22, 200 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens set to the 105mm position. I used aperture priority and auto white balance -- my standard WB setting for any kind of florescent or mercury vapor illumination.
