I photographed this unique caterpillar in Costa Rica. As yet, I have not identified it. If anyone knows what it might be (genus and species), I would very much appreciate knowing. I used a Canon ring flash for the illumination because that enabled me to freeze the movement of the slowly moving caterpillar and, at the same time, get as much depth of field as possible with an aperture of f/32. The 1/200th shutter plus the small f/stop obliterated the ambient light. The original background was dense, and it looked too busy and unattractive. I used Photoshop to replace it with the jungle foliage you see here. I used a 50mm macro lens for the shot, and my working distance was about 5 inches. I made the mistake of touching a furry caterpillar many years ago, and I never forgot the pain of those urticating hairs. So, now I admire caterpillars and am intrigued by them, but I never, ever touch them.
