Frogs come in a lot of shapes, colors, textures, and, to be honest, weirdnesses. This one has to be near the top of the list for weird frogs, but it is fascinating and definitely photogenic. It is a duck-billed frog from Mexico. Every frog and reptile workshop I do has at least one or two species that I've never seen before. I wanted to show all of the remarkable detail in this very unusual face, so I used an extension tube with a 50mm macro lens. At this amount of magnification, I didn't get complete depth of field even using f/32. Focus stacking wasn't feasible because the frog wouldn't be still for more than a few seconds. This was enough for good photography, but not enough time for a sequence of many shots in which re-focusing had to take place with every exposure. I used a Canon ring flash for the illumination, 1/200 shutter speed, and 640 ISO. The next frog workshop I'm conducting is October 20 - 21.

Jim - I took him from the side, too, George. I actually like both.

George Kistler - I think the lateral view shows his weirdness better. His dark bill is for shortened in this view.
