Adding lightning to a sky is much easier than you might think. All you have to do is choose a bolt of lightning against a night sky and then in Photoshop paste it into the landscape or cityscape photo with Edit > paste. Then, to eliminate the night sky around the bolt, use the blend mode (found using the submenu in the layers palette) and choose 'lighten'. You can size the bolt with Edit > transform > scale, and you can move it into place with the move tool. Additional correction may be needed to eliminate unwanted color in the original capture and/or adjust the exposure of the bolt of lightning with Image > adjustments > levels, but it is not necessary to make any kind of precise selection. The landscape here is a shot of the Grand Canyon from the south rim taken with HDR.
