My second favorite thing to do in life, after breathing, is standing on the ground. I hate airplanes -- large or small -- but I force myself to fly for the pictures, whether it's an international trip abroad or aerial photography. In this case, I hired a small plane to fly me above the tulips fields in northern Holland, and it was exciting indeed to see all of the colors and patterns of the flowers. When shooting from the air, depth of field isn't relevant since everything will be in focus at any lens aperture because the subject-to-camera distance is usually between 500 and 1000 feet. Shutter speed is crucial, though, to eliminate the vibration of the plane and the significant movement due to turbulence. I used a 70-200mm lens for this picture, and the settings were 1/1250, f/5, 200 ISO. I was shooting through an open window for maximum picture quality.

Jim - Hi Richard, I would call Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, Holland and ask the staff about the timing of the bloom. Usually between April 24 and April 30 is ideal.
