This is the unique rock formation in the Bisti Badlands known as the 'Alien Throne'. It looks great in many types of light, but in this shot I used a $10 high intensity flashlight to paint the rocks with light. I used a 16-35mm wide angle set to 35mm, and the settings were 10 seconds, f/11, and 100 ISO. You can't trust the in-camera meter to read the exposure in a situation like this. It's all about trial and error. I used a long shutter speed in order to give me enough time to paint the Alien Thrown with light as well as some of the adjacent rocks. This was done at twilight specifically to capture the beautiful contrast between the cobalt blue sky and the color of the artificial light.
