The sun bittern is an unremarkable and mundane bird . . . until it flies. Then its magnificent wing pattern is revealed. When the bird is flying away from the camera and then puts the brakes on its forward movement, that’s when you can see the full display of the stunning colors and pattern. I wasn't able to capture that, but In this shot I photographed it flying across my field of vision. Even with this view, you can appreciate how exquisite it is. I shot this from an open truck moving slowly on a terrible gravel road, so it is amazing I was able to get a sharp image. I shot this with a 100-400mm Canon zoom, and my settings were 1/2000, f/5.6, and 1250 ISO.

Bryan - Jim, I just took a photo of one of these at the Boston zoo and you're right, they look mundane. I would never have made the connection if I hadn't been naming my pictures when you email came. Thanks for your work, I sure learn a lot.

Bob Vestal - This is a gorgeous bird and beautiful shot. Wildlife in the Pantanal clearly is spectacular. Been silent for quite awhile, but finally slowly catching up.
