I would have liked to capture a picture of this bird in flight, but I wasn't fast enough. It is a Gouldian finch, and I photographed it in Australia. Due to habitat loss, the population of these finches went from hundreds of thousands in the early 20th century to about 2500 today. What a shame. With small birds, it's often necessary to use more glass than you'd like to fill a significant part of the frame. For this shot, I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto plus a 2x teleconverter giving me 1000mm of focal length. I took this in 2013 when I was using the Canon 5D Mark II, and noise was a much bigger problem back then than it is now. So, I kept my ISO to 1000, and that meant my shutter was only 1/500. Ideally, I should have used 1/1000, but again, I wanted to keep the ISO reasonable. My aperture was f/10. In reviewing this image before posting it, I saw that it needed some digital help. So, I applied Topaz DeNoise AI to eliminate the noise and then Topaz Sharpen AI to improve the resolution.
