This is one of the famous landmarks in the Southern Patagonia Ice Field in Argentina, Cerro Torre. The morning light illuminated it beautifully. I was fortunate enough to photograph an Andean condor in full view of the mountains, but the bird didn’t fly exactly where I wanted it. So, I put the two images together. This would have been an impossible shot to get anyway because I used a 500mm lens plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length, and the shallow depth of field would have rendered the mountains out of focus. The condor is the largest continental flying bird with a wing span of 10 feet. Only the albatross is larger, but it flies over the ocean. To freeze the wings of the condor, I used a shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second. Usually I use 1/3200, but these huge birds flap their wings very slowly compared to much small species.
