It was unusual that this small pond had melted in January, but after severe cold in late December, the Kalispell area warmed up quite a bit to the low to mid 30's Fahrenheit. The advantage to us photographers was that it was more comfortable weather for photography, and we were able to capture beautiful reflections in the water. I took this arctic wolf shot with a Canon 100-500mm zoom set to 300mm, and the settings were 1/1600, f/7.1, and 2000 ISO. With wildlife photography, I now err on the side of fast speeds to guarantee sharp images. I was tired of 'almost' sharp pictures, so I set the shutter fast enough such that if the animal even turns its head, that movement will be frozen. And if they run or jump, I'll be sure to render everything with tack sharp detail. In post-processing, I moved the highlight slider all the way to the left to recover detail and texture in the snow.
