This a baby jackal peaking at the world from its den. I captured this during my last trip to Kenya with a 400mm focal length and a Canon 7D Mark II, which is a cropped sensor camera. The actual focal length when you calculate the crop factor of 1.6 was 640mm. I have since sold this camera because it has way too much noise. Noise is not apparent in this shot because of the subject matter -- the middle tonality along with lots of texture. In deep shadows and with ISO settings above 1600, the 7D II produces images that, for me, are unusable. My settings were 1/640, f/9, and 1600 ISO. Notice the catchlights in the eyes. This looks natural and correct. When photographers use a flash to simulate this look, it doesn't work well. The dot of light in the eyes reflecting the flash looks almost alien-like and very unnatural.
