This is a wild orangutan I photographed on the last Indonesian photo tour I led. We were in Kalimantan, the Indonesia portion of Borneo, and this baby and its mother were watching my group as we walked from our boat to the lodge on a raised wooden boardwalk. The mother didn't seem nervous or stressed at all as we photographed her baby. I used a 100-400mm lens, and I was shooting from only about 8 feet away to get this frame-filling shot. My settings were 1/160, f/7.1, 1000 ISO, and I hand held the camera and lens. I was lucky to have diffused light from a cloud cover. Had the sun been out the contrast would have ruined the picture. It was extremely hot and humid, and I wondered how the orangs handle the climate with their thick mass of hair.
