This is an exceptionally beautiful ball python I photographed during one of my frog and reptile workshops. The flat rock background was brought in just to photograph snakes. While I often prefer a low angled, eye-level perspective when photographing animals, unique patterns that many snakes exhibit are best photographed from above. I used a ring flash because I wanted an even distribution of light, and I made sure the back of the camera, i.e. the plane of the digital sensor, was as parallel as possible to the python. I took this with a 50mm macro lens, and my settings were 1/200, f/32, and 320 ISO. I really didn't need such a small lens aperture, but my camera was set that way for the small frogs so I just used the same settings. In post-processing, I toned down the highlights a little to insure excellent detail in the white skin of the snake.
