On Caddo Lake in Texas, my photo tour group was lucky enough to see and photograph a barred owl. I shot this with a 500mm focal length (using a Canon 100-500mm zoom) from a boat. Even though the water was very calm, the boat still had movement. That, in addition to the long lens, required a fast shutter speed to insure sharpness. One of the great things about having a high megapixel count is the images can be cropped and you can still have a hi res picture. The Canon R5 opens in Photoshop as a 128 meg file; I cropped this image down to 71 megs. Had I used a 1.4x teleconverter, I wouldn't have had to crop it. However, I didn't want to waste time in connecting the teleconverter because I thought the owl might fly away. In fact, 5 seconds after I shot this, the bird did take flight in the forest. My settings were 1/1000, f/8, 3200 ISO.
