My annual Venice workshop starts on Feb. 2, so I thought I'd share a favorite shot of mine that I think of as 'Beauty and the beast'. Every year, the exquisite costumes, the elegant poses, and medieval backgrounds combine to offer spectacular imagery. These kinds of fantasy photographs inspire me to go beyond the obvious and apply filters, textures, and to composite the pictures in artistic ways, and this is one example. I combined the original with a texture I bought online, and then I changed the colors in Photoshop with Image > adjustments > hue/saturation.
For about 90% of my shots during carnival in Venice I use a 24-105mm focal length. One of the new things I'll be trying this year is the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 super fast wide angle lens particularly at dawn when the street lamps provide most of the illumination. This will allow me to use a lower ISO, and I anticipate that the ultra wide angle focal length will produce some dramatic results.
