I photographed this bobcat during my winter wildlife workshop in Montana. I prefer diffused light like this because contrast is at a minimum and the exposures of the snow aren't so critical. It's been my experience that digital files come out of the camera devoid of bright highlights, so I usually have to use Image > adjustments > levels in Photoshop to move the right hand slider to the left to the beginning of the histogram graph. This makes a world of difference, and it brings the images back to what we see with our eyes. With snow, the other thing I do is open the hue/saturation dialog box and desaturate just the blue color. This makes the snow look pure white, which it is, instead of having a bluish cast. My settings were 1/1250, f/8, and 500 ISO. The shutter speed was high because the bobcat was very active, running all over the place. This image was taken during a momentary pause. My next winter wildlife workshop is from Feb. 1 -5, and it's based in Kalispell, Montana.
