As I was shooting this scene, I watched the legs of the camels and when they were in an attractive graphic position, I took the photo. What makes silhouettes successful is the graphic design, or shape, of the subjects. In addition, I wanted one of the camels to block or partially block the sun. I thought that would add a certain drama. The exposure was determined simply by examining the LCD screen to assess the light. Because the late afternoon sun was so bright, this forced underexposure relative to what I was seeing. I tweaked the exposure using the exposure compensation feature until I liked the result. Any kind of spot metering in this situation wouldn’t work well. Because the subjects were constantly moving, i wouldn’t have had time to use this kind of exposure mode. My settings were 1/2500, f/16, and 200 ISO. I used a 24-105mm lens for the shot.
