The land forms and the remarkable palette of colors in John Day Fossil Beds National Monument located in eastern Oregon are stunning. For this landscape image, I composed it such that the sky was eliminated so all the attention would focus on the design in the hills. Overcast conditions were essential here because otherwise harsh light and contrasty shadows would interfere with beautiful forms and colors. The use of a telephoto lens compressed the elements in the scene, and this underscored the repetitive lines. My settings were 1/30, f/16, 100 ISO, and I used a tripod along with a 70-200m lens. In post-processing, I added some clarity, contrast, and a bit of vibrance to make this image really pop.
