These are marine iguanas from the Galapagos Islands. What's interesting about this image is that it is a one second exposure. I took this with a medium format film camera, the Mamiya RZ 67, and depth of field in medium and large format cameras is much less than in the 35mm film format or our current digital format. Because the reptiles were on a slight slope of hardened lava, and because of the shooting angle, I had to use f/32 to maintain the depth of field necessary to make everything sharp. This was early in the morning and the iguanas were still chilly from the night before, and that meant they were perfectly motionless. That's why I could get away with such a long exposure (on a tripod, of course). I was using Fujichrome Provia 100 film at the time.
