Many times when the weather is gloomy and low gray clouds or rain makes a beautiful sunset seem out of the question, don't give up. Too many tiimes I've seen the weather change at the last minute and suddenly you'll get a shaft of sunlight or the colors turn golden, and the photography becomes incredible. That's what happened on one of my photography tours as my group and I hoped for beautiful sunset lighting on Salzburg, Austria. It was raining, and it seemed absolutely hopeless. But as we had coffee and cakes in this rooftop cafe that offered such a great view on the citiy, I watched the sky constantly, hoping for a miracle. About 5 minutes before sunset, a small window opened in the clouds in the western sky, and a shaft of light illuminated the castle above the city. It was really incredible, and in contrast with the dark, stormy clouds in the background, the warm, low angled light looked stunning.
My camera settings were: 1/60, f/5.6, 200 ISO, and the lens I used was my 24-105mm set to 32mm.
