This evening in Edinburgh my photo tour group had a surprisingly beautiful sunset as seen from the top of Calton Hill. It was surprising because all we could see from our hotel before we left for the lofty perspective from the Hill was gray clouds. We we arrived, a small opening in the cloud cover in the west set the horizon on fire. The orange glow was stunning. The only problem was that the sunset wasn't behind the skyline. It should have been, of course, but it wasn't. So, with the use of a layer mask and a precise selection of the clock tower, I blended the sunset sky with the blue-gray clouds over the city and made the picture I wanted. I used a 100-400mm lens from a tripod, and my settings for the twilight scene on the city were .8 seconds, f/8, and 160 ISO. I used a 2-second self-timer in lieu of a cable release to insure sharp pictures.
