The Jember Fashion Carnaval takes place in Indonesia every year, and it is a stunning display of outrageous costuming. It takes place over 5 days, and one day is devoted to children. This is a six-year old little girl whose costume was probably three times as big as she was. Unlike the carnival in Venice, where most of the costumed models wear masks, in Indonesia the faces are decorated. The young people who participate in the festival are absolutely beautiful, and it's a photographer's paradise. With press passes that my entire photo tour group gets (thanks to my wife, who is Indonesian), we can take these beautiful, tight close-ups of the kids as they are being decorated for the main event. I used the shade of a building to provide the soft and diffused light that makes this portrait work so well. My settings were 1/40, f/4, 400 ISO. My shutter speed was dangerously slow -- that was an oversight. I'm lucky this is so sharp. I should have raised the ISO to 1000 which would have enabled the shutter to be 1/100.
