I find it endlessly fascinating how people all over the world adorn themselves. Costumes, masks, scarification, face painting, jewelry, makeup, tattoos -- it's amazing. One of the great festivals in the world where participants go all-out is the Jember Fashion Carnaval in Indonesia. I've led a number of photo tours there (the next one is in the summer of 2019) and everyone gets outstanding images. Here is one such example. I really should have used a little more depth of field, though. This was taken with the Canon 5D Mark II three years ago, and although it handles noise well, it's not as good as the newer cameras in that regard. I was always conscious of trying to keep the ISO low when possible. I shot this at 800 ISO and 1/800th of a second, and that meant I had to sacrifice a little DOF. I really should have slowed the shutter speed down, though, to 1/200. Those two f/stops would have translated into an aperture of f/13 instead of f/6.3. In festivals, things happen very fast, and if you're changing settings on the camera you can easily miss a great shot. Still, this is a good lesson in not letting any of the automatic features on the camera dictate the settings. You (and I) always have to constantly monitor the shutter, aperture, and ISO to make sure we are getting the best choices for each situation.

Jim - Hi Richard, No, the exotic makeup is done by friends or family members for the carnival. I used a 70-200mm lens. Happy New Year to you, too.
