Every year a remarkable festival takes place in Jember, Indonesia on the island of Java. The costuming is outrageous, the colors are amazing, and the beautiful faces of the young participants make incredible portraits. One of the days of the festival is entirely devoted to children. Some of the costumes they wear are two or three times higher than they are! This is a six year old little girl who was being made up for the main event. My wife, Indiana, is from Indonesia, and she obtains VIP passes for my entire photo tour group so we can go behind the scenes and take these kinds of close-ups before the participants parade in front of the thousands of spectators. Note the lighting -- I made this portrait in the shade of a building. You can never go wrong with using diffused light. My settings for this shot were 1/100, f/5, and 400 ISO. I expect to be leading a photo tour to Indonesia in August, 2019 that will include this festival.
