I am currently in Costa Rica with another photo tour, and for this trip we are focused largely on hummingbirds as well as other exotic bird species here. We also had an incredible day today photographing snakes, frogs, and other captivating reptiles native to this country.
What makes this trip especially interesting, though, are the setups I create to shoot hummingbirds. The male green crowned brilliant hummingbird, above, is an example of what everyone has been shooting so far. With the four-flash setups, we turn the power output of each flash unit down to 1/16th power, and that shortens the flash duration to about 15,000th of a second. That in turn enables us to freeze the wings. In this way, we can see and appreciate the beauty of these tiny gems.
