In the year 2000, I spent a month in South Africa driving all over the country photographing mostly nature and birds. This is a huge colony of blue-eyed cape gannets at Lambert's Bay. It was possible to get within a few feet of the birds, and I took this picture with the ultra wide 43mm lens on a Mamiya 7 medium format film camera. The 6x7cm transparency was then scanned by a high-end Imacon scanner to digitize it. I tried many times to capture a gannet in flight, but with manual focus, manual film advance, and manual exposure it was virtually impossible. That's why I appreciate the advances in technology that we enjoy now, because I remember when photographing birds in flight was incredibly difficult. The deep overcast cause a bluish cast on the scene.
