This is a gerenuk I captured in Samburu National Park in Kenya. These antelope typically eat while stretching like this, and I was lucky to come upon this scene in golden light just before sunset. I was using a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto which was resting on a bean bag for support. It takes an extra moment or two to turn the camera to a vertical orientation, but I didn't want extraneous background behind the animal if I took this horizontally. Never underestimate the importance of the position of an animal's legs in making a picture work. When legs are spread nicely and when they are bent in a graphically pleasing design, that goes a long way to creating a strong image. This is true when animals are standing or running. My settings were 1/800, f/6.3, and 200 ISO.
