Today, June 6, 2014, is the 70th anniversary of the 1944 D-day invasion of Europe. I thought I'd use this picture from Auschwitz-Berkenau, the infamous Nazi death camp, as an example where you can use a wide angle lens placed very close to a foreground subject to emphasize and dramatize it. The flowers left on railroad tracks that brought about 3 million people to their death seem disproportionately large because they were only about 18 inches from my camera. I shot this with a 14mm wide angle, and even though these lenses have tremendous depth of field, I closed down to f/8 to make sure the background was in focus as well as the immediate foreground.
I darkened the sky with the burn tool in Photoshop to add drama and visual impact to this scene. Threatening storm clouds seemed appropriate.
