Giant ant eaters are bizarre creatures. I photographed this one in the Pantanal region of Brazil, and it's possible to get pretty close to them because their eyesight and hearing are so poor. Their smell, though, is acute -- 40 times that of humans. These guys can eat 35,000 ants a day! I took this picture with a Canon 500mm f/4 lens, and the settings were 1/2000, f/11, and 640 ISO. Giant ant eaters can extend their tongues out of their mouth for 24 inches, and a sticky substance secreted by their salivary glands allows them to consume thousands of ants in just a few minutes. Interestingly, they have no teeth.
