Some birds are easier to photograph than others. With nest shots, it's simply a matter of putting yourself in the right place to get the shot. I photographed this mother and chick black-browed albatross on a nest in the Falkland Islands, and I used a 500mm lens plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. I find that I can hand hold the Canon 500mm f/4 and still get sharp pictures. The 600mm lens, on the other hand, is larger, heavier, and much more difficult to hand hold. However, at the end of 2017 Canon is coming out with a 600mm DO lens (diffractive optics) that is much, much lighter and smaller plus it's supposed to be very sharp. We'll see. If it is, in fact, very sharp and if it focuses quickly, this will be the lens to have for wildlife and birds.
