The only way to handle this kind of extreme contrast was to use HDR. This is a shot of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam after I climbed 400 stone steps to gain this wonderful elevated view, and it was about 4pm. I shot right into the sun, and had I only made one exposure and exposed correctly for the sky, the foreground plants would have been black with virtually no detail. To capture what I saw, I had to use the HDR technique. I didn't have a tripod with me, so I rested the Canon 5D Mark III on a solid support and made three shots with 3 f/stop increments. I used 400 ISO, and my aperture was f/18 to make sure both the foreground and the background were sharp. I captured this scene with a 24-105mm lens.
