This is a water drop collision. In other words, the device I was using (from Cognisys Group) released two water drops milliseconds apart. The first drop hit a small pool of water and bounced up colliding with the second drop. I did this in a dark room, and the illumination came from two portable flash units on either side of the water. They were triggered when an invisible beam was broken. A red gel covered one flash and a cyan colored gel covered the other one. Even though my shutter speed was long -- two seconds -- the flash duration (the actual length of time the light in the flash was on) was brief enough to freeze the action. I turned down the power of the flashes to 1/8th, and that gave me a flash duration -- i.e. the shutter speed -- of 1/8000th of a second. My other settings were f/32 and 500 ISO. By varying the interval of time between the release of the two drops, you can get different kinds of collision patterns in the splash.
