The first evening here in the Pantanal region of Brazil my photo tour group photographed a beautiful ocelot. It took about a year for the staff at our lodge to entice this wild jungle cat to come out of the jungle and go to a particular place so photographers could get good pictures of it. The ocelot enjoys a few pieces of chicken, and we get images that would otherwise be impossible. The staging area is lit by a single daylight-balanced light which is needed because the cat usually comes just before dark. We positioned ourselves behind a barrier but in full view of the ocelot. I used a Canon 100-400mm lens set to 300mm, and my settings were 1/125, f/5.6, 8000 ISO. I then used Neat Image software to mitigate the noise resulting from the high ISO.

Jim - Bob, Neat is much better than the noise reduction in LR and PS. Neat doesn't reduce sharpness. Topaz has a new noise reduction plug-in, and I haven't tried it yet. I'm sure it's very good. When I get home, I'll buy it and compare it to Neat. I've never used a batch procedure in Neat. Maybe it's possible, but I process my images one by one so I've never even looked for it.

Bob Vestal - Beautiful animal nicely lit. Such a great opportunity for those on your photo tour group. Have you compared Neat Image to noise reduction with Photoshop? For convenience sometimes with a large number of similar low light images I use noise reduction in Lightroom and the sync tool. Results look pretty good. I have not checked Neat Image for a batch feature.
