When faced with high wind like I was on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, a clinging plastic material comes in very handy. It prevents wind-blown sand and dust particles from being driven into your lenses and camera body which cause terrible damage. Saran Wrap weighs nothing, has virtually no volume, and it's cheap insurance against very expensive repairs.
When I took this picture, the wind was so strong I could hardly keep my balance. Fortunately, the wind was at my back as I faced the Atlantic surf. That meant that the front glass element of my lens wasn't directly exposed to the wind that I estimated was about 60 miles per hour.
My settings for this picture were 1/2000, f/10, 400 ISO, and I was using a 500mm lens to fill the frame with the most dramatic waves I've ever seen.
