I can't imagine how these highland cattle in Scotland can see where they're going, but I find these guys both cute and funny. It's hard to eat a hamburger after having close encounters with these animals. To get this frame-filling shot with a wide angle lens, I waited -- and hoped -- for the cow to come very close to me. A fence separated us, so I couldn't move closer to him or her. I think the wide angle distortion adds to the humor of the image. I took this with a 24-105mm lens set to 24mm, and the settings were 1/250, f/11, and 500 ISO. I was using a Canon 5D Mark III at the time, so noise was more of an issue a few years ago than it is now. Had I taken this today with the Canon R5, I would have used f/22. Even with wide angle lenses, depth of field can be compromised if the camera focuses on a close subject. As you can see, the background isn't quite sharp. In my opinion, it should be.
