I photographed these hippos in Lake Tana, northern Ethiopia. I was in a moving boat. With a long lens in which movement is magnified, it's essential to use a fast shutter speed to guarantee sharpness. I used a Canon 100 - 500mm lens along with a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. My settings were 1/3200, f/10, and 3200 ISO. I really didn't need a shutter speed that fast, but I like to err on the side of sharpness. It's terribly frustrating when pictures are 'almost' sharp. Hippos can easily capsize a boat, so we stayed a safe distance away so as not to disturb these guys.
