Impala are everywhere in east and south Africa, and after you've seen them once or twice, you basically ignore them. They aren't nearly as compelling photographically compared to other animals, especially the cats. Sometimes, though, with the right lighting and some action, good pictures can result. I captured these two male impala in combat, and the edge lighting on their bodies and horns contributed to the success of this image. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 lens along with a 2x teleconverter which gave me 1000mm of focal length. My settings were 1/500, f/11, and 400 ISO. I took this in 2013 when I was still using the Canon 5D Mark II, and back then noise was associated with ISO settings above 800. That's why I chose a low ISO for this shot. I would have preferred a faster shutter since I was using such a long lens, but in this case I was lucky and the 1/500th of a second froze the movement.
