On the island of Bali in Indonesia, there are spectacular and very large sculptures depicting characters from the Ramayana, the epic poem of the religious history of Hinduism and India. About 85% of the people on Bali are Hindu. These works of art were created in high visibility locations -- like in the center of major traffic circles -- and they are seen and appreciated by thousands of people daily. The problem for a photographer, though, is that the backgrounds behind the sculptures are terrible. Traffic, buildings, and power lines make it impossible to capture what I would consider a successful image. Therefore, I took the time and used the pen tool in Photoshop to make a precise selection around the sculpture and the vegetation so I could replace the background. I tried various Balinese and Indonesian images as possibilities, and I liked this one the most. It is the Sacred Heart Catholic Church located in West Bali. The muted tones and blue color bias of the church photo make the artwork stand out beautifully.
