What's interesting about this composite of a Samburu tribesman in Kenya is that the sunrise lighting appears to be grazing the side of the young man's head. That makes this look real -- i.e. like a single exposure. But this picture would have been virtually impossible to take with a single shot. The large sun is indicative of a long telephoto. I used a 500mm f/4 Canon lens for the landscape. The depth of field is obviously very shallow, and to have the subject so large in the frame and, at the same time, to show complete depth of field would have been impractical. The only way do it this with a single exposure would be to position the man far from the camera -- like perhaps a football field length and shoot with f/32. Then, with cropping, you could get this kind of look. However, the quality would be terrible because it would be necessary to crop a significant percentage of the image. My settings for the sunrise image were 1/640, f6.3, 200 ISO.

Jim - Good question, Stan. It was already there.

Stanley Greenberg - Jim:
Did you create the sunrise side lighting on the man or was it there?
