Surma women are also known for the lip plates they wear. Originally, this practice was designed to make young girls and women unattractive to nearby black tribes who would enslave them. Centuries later, it has evolved into a sign of beauty to the Surma. Starting at 15 years old, young girls have their lips cut to accommodate at first a small plate, and then later as the lower lip became distended they wear large and larger plates. When they eat, the plates are removed and the lower lip hangs down. My settings for this shot were 1/500, f/11, and 3200 ISO. The focal length was 128mm with the 100-500mm lens.
