Long exposures with water are intriguing. This is a picture I took in Brugge, Belgium with a 15 second exposure. Look how smooth and glass-like the canal is. I now carry with me an 8-f/stop neutral density filter, so if it's not dark enough to use a long exposure, the ND filter allows me to extend the exposure time. I also had to lower the ISO to 100, and my aperture was f/22.

Jim - Actually, I like the variable, too. But for this kind of work, I really feel an 8/stop is all you need. It's cheaper and lighter to carry. Some people get 10 and 15 f/stop ND filters for blurring clouds, but I don't really like that look in the sky.

Bob Vestal - You had the good fortune of no wind to interfere with this beautiful image. Do you prefer the fixed 8-f/stop ND to a variable ND filter?
