I haven't had the opportunity to photograph a spectacular volcanic eruption, although I'd love to do that. The best I've been able to capture is this shot of Mt. Arenal in Costa Rica spewing rocks at night. As the moten rocks tumbled down the mountain, they broke up into smaller pieces and each one left a trail of light. This is a 30 second exposure at f/2.8, and I used ISO 1000. This is the kind of situation where a light meter is useless. I determined those settings simply by making a few test shots and then studying the results on the LCD monitor on the back of the camera. I shot this from the balcony of my room at the hotel I use in this area during my photo tours to Costa Rica. The volcano was active in 2009.
