On the first day of my Costa Rica photo tour we had a wonderful time photographing exotic bird species as well as huge iguanas in trees. The iguanas are wild but they are habituated to hanging around a particular restaurant that leaves food out for them. I realized earlier in the day when we were photographing birds that, even though it was dark because we were in a cloud forest and the best strategy seemed to be a large lens aperture to minimize the ISO and maximize the shutter speed, the depth of field became too shallow. Only small sections of the birds were sharp, and this is not what I like. Nature has phenomenal detail, and that’s what I wanted to capture with tack sharp clarity. So, when I photographed this iguana, I made sure I didn’t repeat the mistake. My settings for this image were 1/3200, f/20, 2500 ISO and I used a Canon 1Dx Mark II plus a 500mm f/4 and the 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. I used image stabilization because I was hand holding the large lens.
