This is a tight shot of a river near Montreal, Quebec, that's reflecting autumn foliage. The contours of the water moving over submerged rocks distorted the color and turned nature into a beautiful abstraction. I took this with a 70-200mm lens, and the settings were .3 seconds, f/16, and 320 ISO. It was important for me to make the entire surface of the water from the foreground to the background as sharp as possible. Note that even though this is an abstract, it still needs to be sharp to show all of the beautiful detail -- the streaks, the interplay of color, and the sensual contours. I was glad the lighting was soft and diffused because this minimized contrast. In most, but not all, situations, too much contrast is something to avoid.
