During my snowy owl workshop, we visited an abandoned farm because I know a lot of photographers enjoy photographing . . . well, essentially junk. Nostalgic junk is especially captivating, and the fact that the old wagons, rusting cars, broken down farm machinery, and old barns were largely covered in snow made the scene particularly photogenic. I used a 24mm lens for this shot, and my settings were 1/500, f/10, and 1000 ISO. I typically underexpose my snow images 1/3 or 2/3 f/stop to protect the highlights. If the snow is blown out with a total loss of texture and detail, the picture is ruined. In post-processing, I lighten the files to taste while, at the same time, carefully watching that the highlights retain detail. I left the slightly bluish cast in place because in winter photos, blue connotes cold. And in Saskatchewan in January, it's pretty cold!
